Building High Performing Teams

Unlock the secrets to team success with our Building High Performing Teams Training Course – practical, lively and perfect for UK workplaces!

Start with Shared Goals (and Celebrate Them!)

Great teamwork starts with everyone rowing in the same direction. It sounds simple but it is easy to overlook. Instead of assuming everyone knows what matters, take time to set clear, shared goals. Make these goals visible – stick them up on the wall or keep them at the top of your project board. Check in together as you go. Celebrate progress as a team, not just as individuals. Did you smash a deadline? Win a new client? Survive a bonkers week? Take five minutes to cheer each other on. A bit of celebration keeps energy high and reminds everyone that you are all part of something bigger.

Communicate Like a Pro (and Listen Up)

If you want teamwork to flow, communication has to be easy, open and honest. That does not mean endless meetings or group chats that never end. Instead, try daily or weekly catch-ups where everyone can share updates, sticky bits and small wins. Use simple tools – maybe a shared document or a group message channel – to keep everyone in the loop. But here is the big one: listen as much as you talk. When a teammate raises an issue or shares an idea, give them your full attention. Active listening builds trust and makes people feel valued. And if there is confusion or crossed wires, sort it out early before things get awkward.

Know Each Other’s Strengths (and Use Them!)

Every team is a bundle of different skills, personalities and quirks. That is a good thing! Spend time getting to know what everyone brings to the table. Maybe someone loves spreadsheets while another is a whiz at talking to clients. Share these strengths and let people play to them. If you are a team leader, delegate tasks based on who is best suited – and if you are not, do not be shy about saying what you are good at. When people feel they can use their strengths, they are more engaged and the work gets better. Plus, it is more fun to help each other out than to struggle alone.

Make Space for Honest Feedback

Feedback is not just for annual reviews. In high-performing teams, feedback happens all the time and goes both ways – from leaders to team members and back again. Create a culture where it is safe to point out when something is not working or to give a mate a pat on the back for a job well done. Keep it specific and constructive. Instead of saying That was bad, try Next time, let us try doing it this way. Swap ideas on how to improve. The more people get used to honest feedback, the less likely little niggles will turn into big problems.

Handle Conflict Early (and Kindly)

No team is totally drama-free. Disagreements will happen, whether it is about a big decision or who ate the last custard cream. The trick is to spot tension early and deal with it head-on but kindly. Encourage team members to raise concerns as soon as they come up. When something feels off, talk about it privately and calmly. Focus on the problem, not the person. If needed, get a neutral third party to mediate. The sooner you sort conflict, the quicker your team can get back to what it does best – working together.

Keep Learning (and Laughing) Together

The best teams are always learning. That might mean sharing what went wrong in a project so you do not repeat it, or swapping tips on new tools. Book in regular team learning sessions, whether it is a quick lunch-and-learn or a full training day. And do not forget to have a laugh along the way. Teams that enjoy each other’s company are more resilient and creative when challenges pop up. A little bit of fun (and a lot of biscuits) can work wonders for morale.
