Start with Trust

Trust is the bedrock of any great team. Without it, collaboration is just a box-ticking exercise. So how do you build trust at work? Start by setting the tone yourself – be honest about your own mistakes and open about what you do not know. Encourage others to give constructive feedback, and show you value it by acting on what you hear. Celebrate small wins together, not just the big ones, so everyone feels part of the journey.

Trust also means having each other’s backs. If someone is struggling, offer a hand instead of blame. When team members feel safe to be themselves, they are more likely to speak up, share ideas and get stuck in.

Make Communication Flow Naturally

Ever worked somewhere where nobody shares what is really happening until it’s too late? Not ideal. Open communication is key to collaboration. Hold regular catch-ups where everyone gets a turn to talk – not just the usual suspects. Use tools like group chats, shared documents or project boards so information is easy to find and update. Make it normal to ask questions or say ‘I’m not sure’.

If you are a manager, keep your door (real or virtual) open. For teams, try a quick daily stand-up, where everyone shares a quick update. It is amazing how much this can break down barriers and keep everyone on the same page.

Celebrate Strengths, Not Just Roles

In most teams, people get pigeonholed into their job titles. But collaboration comes alive when you tap into everyone’s strengths. Maybe the quietest person is a whiz at spotting risks, or someone from another department brings a fresh perspective. Get curious about what your team members are good at – and let them show it.

You could run a ‘skills swap’ session where people share something they do well, or pair up team members from different backgrounds to solve a problem together. The more you mix things up, the more creative and resilient your team will become.

Break Down Silos with Cross-Team Projects

Do your teams work in silos, barely chatting to colleagues in other departments? It is a classic UK workplace challenge. To break the cycle, set up cross-team projects or working groups. Give them a clear goal – it could be improving a process, launching a new product or finding ways to save time.

Encourage people to share what they learn with the wider team. This not only builds knowledge but also helps people see the big picture. When teams realise their work connects with others, they are more likely to share resources, ideas and support.

Make Collaboration Part of Everyday Life

Team-building days are fun, but true collaboration happens in the day-to-day. Look for small ways to encourage it, like inviting different voices into meetings or rotating who chairs the session. Recognise acts of collaboration in your team shout-outs or newsletters.

Ask for feedback on how the team could work together even better. Maybe it is as simple as sharing a cuppa and a chat on a Friday, or setting up a ‘buddy’ system for new starters. The more you weave collaboration into daily routines, the more natural it becomes.

Keep Learning and Adapting

Team culture is not set in stone. Take time every few months to check in as a group: What’s working? Where are the sticking points? Be open to new ways of doing things – maybe a new tool, a new meeting format or even just a new playlist for your workspace!

The best collaborative teams are always learning, adapting and having a bit of fun along the way. If something is not working, do not be afraid to try something else. Your team culture will thank you for it.
