In today's fast-paced workplaces, creative problem solving is the secret sauce that sets high-performing teams apart. But creativity is not just for artists or inventors. It is a muscle every team can flex—and when you get it right, the results can be game-changing. Start with the Right Question

Every great solution starts with a great question. Instead of leaping straight to What should we do? try questions like What's really going on here? or How else could we look at this? Reframing the problem helps teams see it from a new angle. For example, if your customer service team is getting lots of complaints about response times, ask not just How do we reply faster? but also What stops us from replying quickly? or How might customers want to reach us in future? Suddenly, the door opens to creative ideas you might otherwise miss.

Make Brainstorming Fun (and Actually Useful)

Let us be honest—traditional brainstorming can sometimes feel like pulling teeth. Make it a game! Set a timer for five minutes and see how many wild ideas you can come up with, no matter how silly they sound. Ban any judgment during this stage. Whether you are in the office or on Zoom, use sticky notes or digital whiteboards so everyone can add ideas at once. Then, group the ideas by theme and let the team vote on favourites. The key is to get everyone involved, so quieter team members can shine too.

Mix Up Your Team for Fresh Perspectives

When teams are made up of people with similar backgrounds or roles, it is easy to fall into groupthink. Try inviting someone from a totally different department or job level into your problem-solving session. Or swap roles for the day and see what insights the fresh eyes bring. For example, ask a sales colleague to join a process improvement meeting, or get admin staff involved in customer experience brainstorming. You will be amazed at the solutions that pop up when you shake up the mix.

Embrace Mistakes as Part of the Process

Fear of failure is a creativity killer. Remind your team that not every idea has to work—and that is OK! In fact, some of the best innovations come from ideas that did not go as planned. Build a culture where experiments are celebrated, and lessons from flops are shared openly. You could even run a monthly Fail Fast session, where everyone shares what they tried, what bombed, and what they learned. It takes the sting out of getting things wrong, and encourages more people to have a go.

Get Visual: Draw, Map, and Play

Words are great, but sometimes your brain needs a different nudge. Grab some paper and sketch out the problem, or use flowcharts and mind maps to see how things connect. Try using objects (like LEGO bricks or everyday office items) to physically build a model of the challenge. It might sound silly, but getting hands-on can unlock lightbulb moments, especially for visual thinkers. And if you are working remotely, digital tools like Miro or Jamboard work wonders for mapping ideas in real time.

Turn Ideas into Action (and Celebrate Success)

The most creative idea in the world is useless unless it leads to action. Once your team has picked a solution to try, agree clear next steps and assign tasks. Keep momentum going by checking in on progress and making space to review what worked and what could be better. And do not forget to celebrate the wins—big or small! A simple thank you, a team lunch, or a shout-out in a meeting goes a long way to making everyone feel valued and fired up for the next challenge.
