Building a high-performing team is not about luck or hiring a bunch of superstars. It is about creating the right environment, habits and culture so that everyone brings their best to work every day. Whether your team is big or small, in-person or remote, these practical habits will help you get the results you want - and probably have a bit of fun along the way too.

Building High Performing Teams
Give your team the tools, skills and energy to perform at their best with our Building High Performing Teams course.
Start With Trust (and Show It!)
Teams that trust each other always outperform those that do not. Trust is the foundation for open communication, taking risks and helping each other out. How do you build it? Start by being honest about what you know (and what you don't). Follow through on promises, own up to mistakes, and encourage your team to do the same. Try a regular 'win or wobble' round in your team meetings, where everyone shares a recent success and something they are finding tricky. This creates a safe space and reminds everyone that we are all in this together.
Set Crystal Clear Goals
Ever felt like your team is pulling in different directions? That is usually a sign your goals are not clear enough. Make sure everyone knows what success looks like and how their work fits into the bigger picture. Use simple visuals, like a weekly scoreboard or a team progress wall, to keep goals front of mind. Do not just set targets and forget them - revisit them regularly, celebrate progress and tweak as needed. The more your team owns the goals, the more motivated they will be to smash them.
Make Collaboration the Default
High-performing teams do not just work together, they actually enjoy it. Break down silos by mixing up who works with who. Try pairing up team members on small projects, or host quick-fire brainstorming sessions where every idea gets a moment in the sun. Encourage people to ask for help and reward collaboration, not just solo achievements. The more your team shares knowledge and supports each other, the faster you will solve problems and spot opportunities.
Keep Feedback Flowing (Both Ways)
Feedback is the breakfast of champions. Make it a normal part of daily life, not just something saved for annual reviews. Give feedback that is specific, timely and focused on actions, not personalities. Even better, ask for feedback yourself as a leader, showing you are open to learning too. You could try a simple 'Start, Stop, Continue' exercise where team members share what behaviours they think the team should start doing, stop doing and keep up. This is a great way to spark fresh ideas and keep everyone growing.
Celebrate Progress and Small Wins
It is easy to get caught up in the big projects and forget to celebrate the little victories. High-performing teams make a habit of recognising progress, however small. This boosts morale, builds momentum and reminds everyone that their efforts matter. Start meetings by sharing a good news story from the week, or keep a digital shout-out board where anyone can recognise a colleague's contribution. Remember, a quick thank you or a round of applause can go a long way.
Look After Each Other
People do their best work when they feel supported and included. Check in regularly, not just about tasks but about how people are feeling. Watch out for signs of burnout or stress, and encourage breaks and downtime, especially during busy periods. Make space for fun - even a five-minute team quiz or a virtual coffee break can help people relax and connect. When your team feels cared for, they will care more about the team's success too.
Keep Learning and Adapting
The best teams never stand still. Encourage a culture of curiosity where learning is part of everyday work. Share new ideas, attend training together, or run short 'lunch and learn' sessions where team members teach each other a new skill. When things go wrong (as they sometimes do), treat it as a learning opportunity. Review what happened together and use it as fuel to do even better next time.
