Here's a selection of the tools and ideas you will learn on this Assertiveness Skills training course.
Assertiveness is a term that is used to describe a particular type of behaviour. It’s often associated with confident, strong and direct people. It is though a term that is often misunderstood and confused with aggressive behaviour.
If you speak to different people and ask them to answer the question of what is assertiveness or describe what assertiveness is, everyone will have a differing opinion. This is because assertiveness is behavioural, we all have different perceptions of what assertiveness is and what it looks like.
Assertiveness is behavioural. It also has strong links to attitude and mindset.
One big assumption that is made about assertiveness is that it’s natural – some people are just naturally assertive. This however isn’t true.
Assertiveness does not come naturally. It may be that the behaviour is confused with a personality type of temperament. Or, the person who we think is naturally assertive has just had plenty of practice at being assertive.
Learn more about what assertiveness is in our article What is Assertiveness. These are terms that you may have heard before - in fact, they are commonly used statements to describe peoples behaviour. But, what the difference and do they have similarities?
While aggressive and passive behaviour are both visibly different, they do share something in common. They are both natural reactions and are both emotional responses that we have no control over. Think fight or flight.
Take a look at our article What is Aggressive Behaviour, What is Passive Behaviour and What is Passive-Aggressive Behaviour to learn more.
No is a word that many people find difficult to say. This leads to increased workloads and in some cases being taken advantage of.
It isn’t always the case that people can’t say no. They do, but the no gets over-turned and this leads to a lack of confidence to say no. By understanding how to say no with confidence, we can greatly reduce our workload and stress levels.
Learn more about saying no by reading more in our article How to Say No With Confidence.
The assertive choice triangle is a simple but effective way of helping us to understand what assertiveness is and how to apply it. It shows us that assertiveness is not a natural behaviour that we demonstrate, but a learnt behaviour that we must ‘switch on to use’.
The assertive choice triangle shows us where assertive behaviour sits in comparison to aggressive behaviour and passive behaviour and how these 2 types of behaviour are more instinctive or gut-based behaviours.
Learn more by reading our article The Assertive Choice Triangle.
The bill of assertive rights is 10 things that highlight the freedoms we have to be ourselves without disrespecting others. The 10 statements are choices that we have and, like many other rights that we have, are things that we are all entitled to.
They help us to understand how and when we can all be more assertive and how we can respond to others who are not being assertive with us.
They also point out that we also have the right to choose to not be assertive if we don’t want to be – but we also have to accept the consequences of not choosing to be assertive.

I booked Revolution L&D's Assertiveness Skills course for myself and a group of colleagues who attended an in house online session. My personal reasons were to build up my assertiveness skills within the workplace environment. The trainer Lynne was extremely welcoming and professional and offered up gems of learning that I continue to use after the training. The pre planning administration was led by Gillian, who was helpful and diligent with my last minute requests. I would recommend Revolution for booking organisational in house training sessions as my experience has been extremely positive.
-Tanya Warlock – 24/04/2026 – Assertiveness Skills
I had a great training day on assertive communication. Sue was very knowledgable and taught us practical ways to improve our communicaiton, backed up with theory. There was a very small group of us so we were able to discuss our own personal challenges in detail and relate our training to real life examples.
-Amelia Carey – 01/04/2026 – Assertiveness Skills
Sue was very knowledgeable about eh course subject. She made the course specific to the individuals present, relating each aspect to our different job roles. Highly recommend.
-Rhiannon Hope – 20/02/2026 – Assertiveness Skills
